Changes are coming…

July 24th, 2010 1 comment

Google has recently made changes to their ranking algorithm, making freshly updated content top of their ranking priorities; now it seems others are getting on the bandwagon.

Bing anybody? There has been a recent announcement that Yahoo and Bing will merge their search results, with Bing searches appearing in Yahoo. If your sites are enjoying good rankings in Bing then they will receive a lift-me-up in the search results in Yahoo when the strategy is eventually employed.

Which led me to one question? How are my sites ranking in Bing? I down loaded cuterank (no affiliate link) to see where one of my sites is currently ranked.

As you can see, my site already has good rankings in Bing compared to Yahoo and Google. If the switchover does happen, I wonder how much more traffic I will get if my site continues in the position they are in .

This is a surprising turn of events. I have previously focused all my attention on getting my sites to rank on Google, ignoring the value of Bing and Yahoo. It is not surprising given that Google holds a 60% share of the search engine market. It also turns out that the strategies I have been using to rank in Google (i.e. profile linking) is not welcomed by Google, but LOVED by Bing. As far as I know they don’t even care if the links are “no follow”. So, I have inadvertently SEO’d my site for Bing AND Google without even knowing it.

Of course things may change very quickly. The strategy hasn’t even been fully implemented yet and ranking algorithms in Bing and Yahoo could change over night. However, I think this goes to show that focusing all your attention on Google may not be the best plan for driving traffic.

I’ll be keeping an eye on the situation and optimising all my sites for Bing as well as Google. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I am in an ethical nightmare…

July 11th, 2010 No comments

After listing one of my developed sites on Flippa.com yesterday, and see how easy it was to do; I have several more websites that I can sell in this way. Two I have no problem creating content and promoting, the other I have ethical issues with.

Back in 2007 I was so desperate to make a little money that I was prepared to promote anything in order to do it. I bought a gambling domain – onlinecasinoriches.co.uk- that I wanted to develop. I never got around to it, and I have been paying hosting and domain renewal for the best part of three years at a cost of well over £100.

My problem is this. I don’t like promoting websites which glamorise gambling, loans, credit cards and generally anything that puts or has the potential to put people in financial difficulty. So what to do?

  • I can just let the domain expire.
  • I can sell the domain
  • I can swallow my pride, create some content (via unique content generation such as ArticleRanks.com), monetize, promote and then sell on; washing my hands of any immoral activity beyond that.

On the one hand I feel like I should stand by my principles, but on the other hand I have to think of this as a business. That domain cost me a lot of money and I need to try and at least break even.

I am going to ponder it for a little while. In the meantime, if any of you have any suggestions or opinions please comment below.

One of my websites is for sale.

I have decided to put up for auction my Wrought Iron Lighting site. I enjoyed building the site but I am just curious about how much it will fetch at auction. I also don’t really have the time to promote it properly. Somebody else will get much more out of the site than I ever will.

I am hoping to get around $40 to $50 for the site (although some web site calculators seem to think it is worth much more than that). Given that it has on average 89 unique visitors to the site (110 unique visitors if you ignore July so far); and the amount of backlinks showing up in Google and Yahoo; and the revenue potential of this site; I think that is a fair price.

Anyway we shall see. Who knows, I might be surprised and get much more, but I am being realistic. If this works out I may branch into website development and resale. Let’s wait and see.
